H301 Hiking Holiday in the Gorges des Raspes and the Tarn Valley

Hiking Trek in Southern Aveyron, South France

The Tarn watershed in the Aveyron features rugged and spectacular gorges in the Cévennes, as well as gentle river valleys to the west between Millau and Albi.

Gorges des Raspes du Tarn, located 30 km from Millau and the Millau Viaduct.

The Raspes du Tarn: a pristine area (Natura 2000) and only recently discovered by tourism, where the Mediterranean climate ensures fantastic spring and autumn seasons.

A beautiful and peaceful hiking journey from St-Affrique
to the Raspes du Tarn in the Tarn Valley.

In small but comfortable hotels and guesthouses in old medieval villages, you will be warmly welcomed everywhere.

You will follow the beautiful Tarn River downstream, passing sparsely wooded mountain slopes on both sides. In one of the least populated regions of France, nature abounds. The film "Microcosmos," featuring insects like praying mantises, was filmed nearby.

You will hike through a lightly wooded area with regular shade. Water and cooling opportunities are plentiful.

This is a trip with distances ranging from a minimum of 14 km to a maximum of 17 km for seniors. With additional (inclusive) transfers, seniors never walk more than they wish. The hikes in what the French call a hilly area are easy, without obstacles, and without difficult descents or climbs.
Elevation changes vary from 50m to 200m per day, with no steep climbs.

  • Difficulty level: 2 to 3  -  on a scale of 0 to 7.

  • Daily distances: minimum 14-17 km, maximum 14-22 km.

  • Departure days (first overnight stay): any day.

You can start this hiking holiday in Broquiès (H301-stnd; on this page) or in St-Affrique (H300 plus). You will end in St. Affrique or Broquiès, respectively.

For a relaxing day by the river and a short canoe trip, you can book an extra night in Broquiès with Frans Bevort at Itival.

In St. Affrique, there is a lively market on Saturday mornings.

In Brousse-le-Château, you can visit a genuine medieval castle from the 9th and 13th centuries.

To do the hike from Broquiès to Brousse-le-Château entirely or partially by canoe, you must reserve at least the day before. We can also make the reservation for you.
If you choose to book an extra night in La Jourdanie, you can opt to spend that day only on the canoe trip (3 to 4 hours). The canoe base is a 1500m walk from La Jourdanie. You will walk right along the river to the canoe base.

In the southern French department of Aveyron, with its 260,000 inhabitants tranquility and space are taken for granted.
This region, situated at an altitude between 300 and 800 meters, has only recently been discovered by tourism, preserving its untouched natural beauty.
Thanks to the vibrant wildflowers—fields bursting with orchids in spring and early summer—the stunning autumn colors of oak and chestnut forests, and the incredible diversity of birdlife, this area is a true paradise for hikers and nature lovers. You’ll often encounter the colorful emerald lizard, and along the slopes of the Tarn, you’ll hear cicadas as if you were in Provence. We’ve even spotted geckos in the Tarn Valley! As evening falls, owls, crickets, and praying mantises will surprise you. It’s no coincidence that the nature documentary Microcosmos, about insects, was filmed nearby. Along the banks of the Tarn, you’ll pass through remarkably diverse landscapes: a beautiful hike over the Avant-Causses leads to the Tarn Valley.

After walking through the Gorges des Raspes du Tarn, with its steep granite cliffs, with rolling hills and ridges rising up to 400 meters above the river, you’ll hike both down in the valley and up on the ridges, where the ever-changing scenery offers panoramic views of the layered mountains in the distance (the Monts de Lacaune, the Montagne Noire, the Causses, and the Cévennes). Following the Dourdou Valley, you’ll return to St. Affrique.
